How do you judge the grade of cotton? 

There is no single consumer-facing grading label for cotton. In practice three things decide it:

  • Fibre length: Pima is an extra-long staple variety. Longer fibres spin into finer, smoother yarn with fewer joins, which is why the fabric resists pilling.
  • Origin and purity: look for a stated 100% single variety. Blending pulls the hand feel down, and it is not always prominent on the label.
  • Weave and thread count: the same Pima fibre feels markedly different as a 400 thread count sateen than as a low-count plain weave.

How Pima, American cotton and Sea Island cotton relate

The three names get used interchangeably, but they describe different things.

  • Sea Island cotton: the original extra-long staple variety, and the ancestor of Pima.
  • American cotton: a description of origin. Pima grown in the United States falls under it.
  • Long staple cotton: a description of fibre length, covering both Pima and Egyptian cotton.

So long staple describes the fibre, American describes the origin, and Pima is the variety itself — three different axes rather than one nested inside another.

6. How to care for premium cotton bedding? 

Pima's fine, long fibres hold their smoothness and lustre for years with the right handling.

  • Washing: machine wash at 40°C or below with a mild detergent. Avoid strongly alkaline products and bleach.
  • Drying: tumble dry on low and take the bedding out before it is fully dry, then smooth it flat to cut creasing.
  • Ironing: if needed, press at 150°C or below while the fabric is still slightly damp.
  • Wash separately from zips, hooks and rough fabrics, which can snag the yarn.

Store somewhere dry and ventilated, and avoid leaving it compressed under weight for long periods.
