How to Choose the Best Sleeping Pillow: Position First, Material Second
- Side sleepers: the gap between neck and mattress is widest, so you need the most height and the firmest support to bridge shoulder width. Too soft and the head sinks, bending the neck downward. High-density memory foam suits this — the Cooling Zero-Pressure Pillow uses close to 2kg of it, and the DUO+ has an 11cm side.
- Back sleepers: medium height. The aim is supporting the neck's natural curve, not propping the head up. The DUO+ 9cm side, with its 45-degree contour, is built for this.
- Front sleepers: the lowest height of all. Too much loft forces the neck into extension for hours. A soft, compressible pillow — down or microfibre — is the better fit.
- If you change position through the night: an adjustable-height or dual-layer pillow gives you the most latitude.
Memory Foam, Down or Microfibre?
Memory foam is slow-recovery: it moulds to the head and neck under body heat and pressure, giving the firmest and most consistent support, at the cost of some breathability.
Down is lofty and soft with excellent cradling, can be plumped to adjust height, and resists flattening over time, though it supports more gently than foam.
Microfiber is light, the most affordable, and the easiest to care for — a sensible pick for a guest room or a spare.
Do Cooling Pillows Actually Work in Hong Kong?
Yes, and the difference is noticeable.
- Summer discomfort here comes from heat and humidity together: perspiration around the head and neck with nowhere to go is a common reason for waking at 3am.
- The Cooling Zero-Pressure Pillow pairs a 78% nylon / 22% spandex cooling cover with a memory foam and cooling gel structure — cool on contact, with airflow built into the layers.
- The Bamboo Memory Foam Pillow takes a different route: the micro-porous structure of its 30% bamboo cover actively wicks moisture, several times faster than plain cotton.
- One leads on immediate coolness, the other on staying dry.
Durability & Care
- Memory foam cores must not be washed — water breaks down the polyurethane structure and the core is almost impossible to dry through.
- Down pillows should not go in a domestic machine either; protect with a case, plump regularly, and avoid storing under compression.
FAQs on Pillows
1. What Drives Pillow Prices?
This collection spans a wide range, and three factors account for most of the spread:
- Fill cost: microfibre is the cheapest, memory foam sits in the middle, and imported high-content down is the most expensive — the Germany Imported Down Pillow is even graded by fill weight.
- Construction: dual-layer builds, adjustable heights and contoured profiles each add tooling and stitching stages.
- Performance fabrics: cooling covers, gel layers and bamboo blends all carry a materials premium.
Worth saying plainly: more expensive does not mean better for you. If you sleep on your side and need firm support, a mid-priced high-density memory foam pillow will serve you better than a costlier but softer down one.
Settle position and height first, then choose within budget.
